Korea-Africa Center Delegation Visits Sudan Ahead of Sanctions Lifting

Korea-Africa Center Executive Director, Il-soo Kim was received in Sudan for the first time  last week at the invitation of Ahmed Saad Omer, the Minister of Cabinet.
During his three- day visit, the Korean official met with a number of Sudanese officials and visited General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, Center for Strategic Studies, Consultancy Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, Global Research Center, Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organizations, Strategic Planning Center, etc.
At the meeting of Executive Director Kim and Minister Omer, the minister expressed satisfaction with the strengthening Korea-Sudan relations and called Korea-Africa Center to make efforts to help Korean companies finding more business opportunities in the Sudan, in case that the U.S. economic sanctions are lifted in July.
The Korean official confirmed the high potential of Sudanese economy through his visit, pointing out that the Korea-Africa Center will not only raise awareness of the means in Korea through various business forums, seminars, research and exchange activities, but also will make efforts to make economic cooperation.
In addition, Executive Director Kim and representative research institutions such as Center for Strategic Studies and Global Research Center, discussed various cooperation plans as well as possibility of signing future cooperation MoU, joint research and human interchange.
The visit comes ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Korea-Sudan diplomatic ties in 2017 and the decision to lift the U.S. sanctions on the Sudan in July.
The Korea-Sudan relations, which had been somewhat stagnant in the 2000s, began to revitalize in November 2016, following the visit of Ibrahim Ghandour, the Foreign Minister. Especially in April this year, Tae-ho Lee, the Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs visited Khartoum, and held High-level Policy Consultation Meeting with Abdelghani Elnaim, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Sudan and discussed the plan to strengthen cooperation in various fields between the two countries.
